Great China by far is the best authentic Chinese Restaurant in the East Bay. I have tried many restaurants and no one can come close in presentation, quality, service and taste. Prices have gone up but so has everywhere else. Still is worth every penny you spend.
Excellent food! Enjoyed the experience. Refills were provided without request. The restaurant was conveniently located.
Do yourself a favor and order the double skin appetizer and the pork spareribs. These 2 items are superior and make Great China a real destination. Everything else is solid, but doesn't impress at the same level as those two items. We moved away a few years ago and came back just for those 2 dishes. The ambiance and service of this place is also top notch... it's unexpectedly nice for a truly authentic Chinese restaurant. You always see a ton of Chinese people eating here, so it must be good!
Favorite spot for Peking duck. Don't forget to request the carcass before you leave. Makes a hearty and versatile duck bone broth. By far one of the best Chinese restaurants in the East Bay.
I love going to great China on my lunch breaks. They have a great lunch special that comes with hot and sour soup (dine in only), a veggie spring roll, a side salad, side of rice (get the fried rice!) and your entree. It's definitely enough food to have for leftovers too. There's a lot of seating and it's a great space for larger parties. The servers are knowledgeable and answer any questions we had about the dishes (I wanted to know what kind of fish they used) and the food comes out pretty quick. Will continue to come to great China for my weekday lunch meals!
Man, been coming to this place since before it was this fancy. When it was still back in the alley way in Berkeley. But I'm glad that the next generation has taken this place to the next level! Just wished the prices didn't have to go with it. But hey, if you want a true Peking duck experience, this is the best in the East Bay that I've experienced so far. You can get Chinese roasted duck in many Chinese restaurants but they prepare it in a more southern Chinese fashion where the skin isn't as thin and crispy. The meat isn't as fat free. But Great China does it northern style and its just extra tasty this way. Their other dishes are all fantastic as well. Every time I try ordering something a little different off the beaten path, I still love it! And the servers are typically quite nice, esp the front of house host/esses. The only bad thing I have to complain about this place is that they are always so busy. A great problem to have for them, right? But it makes the dining experience a little worse. Because you have to wait for you table often. And I believe they don't take reservations for parties of a small size. So plan ahead or even call ahead to see just how crowded it is before you make the blind effort to just show up. You'll be happier if you prepare!
Great China offers up high quality traditional Chinese dishes with a twist. I especially love that the food isn't greasy, which is what you often find with Chinese food. We ordered the spicy eggplant, potstickers, fried rice, Mongolian beef, honey walnut prawns, salt & pepper calamari, bok choy & shiitake mushrooms, ant climbed the tree, and double skin (not pictured). The ambiance is modern and clean, so you can dress up or down. Service is always so friendly and attentive. The restaurant is located in downtown Berkeley, so parking can be a bit tough, especially on the weekends. Definitely a spot to try!
- Whenever my parents visited me as a student at Berkeley, we always went to great china. My favorite place for Peking duck in the Bay Area - they're unique for perfectly removing all the fat and getting the skin so crispy and tasty - the double skin dish is another must have, I haven't found a better one in the Bay Area - Interior vibes are great with a Modern and fresh decor - Service is quick and attentive Overall, one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area
Great experience overall, sort of traditionally Chinese setup and dishes but seems substantially American influenced too. We went because they have good gluten free options, which I'm told isn't super easy to come by. I quite enjoyed the peking duck--very flavorful and a nice balance of fattiness. The rest of the dishes were nice, though nothing special. Perhaps we should have ordered a bit differently? Will likely come back anyhow, when in the mood for a nice shared meal.
Great place for authentic northern Chinese food! Definitely better for a relatively larger group so you can order family-style. The food portions are pretty generous, though it's on the pricier side overall. Service was fast. Some of my favorites include the double skin (a refreshing and flavorful cold appetizer with veggies and mung bean noodles), Peking roast duck (not too oily, decently authentic), and walnut prawns (so much better than the Panda Express version). Their lunch special is worth trying! It comes with a small bowl of spicy & sour soup, rice, a dish of your choice, a spring roll, some veggies, and two slices of fruit. If I try to finish it all, I'll likely be in a food coma all afternoon. Fair warning, despite how much I enjoy going, I do notice some variance in cooking quality depending on the day.
